Deep within the emerald embrace of the Mentawai rainforest, a world older than woven cloth or fired clay clings to existence. This is the realm of the last Indigenous people of Mentawai, an archipelago southwest of Sumatra, where shamans, hunter-gatherers, and guardians of an ancient culture fight for survival against the encroaching tide of modernity. Their struggle is a poignant symphony of resilience and vulnerability, captured with sensory intimacy in this documentary. The film invites us to journey into the heart of the jungle, to experience life in its raw, vibrant beauty. We witness daily rituals and spiritual practices deeply intertwined with the natural world, a harmony threatened by the relentless advance of logging companies. Through rare historical footage and the insights of investigative journalist Febrianti, the film unveils a history of oppression and resistance. We meet Father Laulau, a steadfast leader in the fight to protect his people, his voice echoing across decades of struggle. His journey intersects with the broader geopolitical forces reshaping Indonesia, as a new generation rises to join the fight for cultural and environmental preservation. But the stakes are higher than ever. As Jakarta’s return to authoritarian policies fuels widespread deforestation, the Mentawai people face a critical juncture.
